Travel
Every place has a face it shows strangers and a face it keeps for itself. Travel photography is the long game of waiting long enough to catch the second one.
The Approach
Place as
Character.
The most interesting travel images are not the ones made at the obvious spots at the obvious time. They are the ones made an hour before, or an hour after, or around the corner from the landmark — when the place is no longer performing for the crowd and is just being itself.
Travel photography for me is about place as character. What does this city feel like at 5am? What does this village look like in the rain? What does the market look like in the hour after it closes? Those are the questions that drive the work, and the answers are almost always more interesting than the guidebook version.
The travel series spans multiple countries and regions. What runs through all of it is a preference for the hour before or after the crowd, and a belief that the most honest images of a place are made when the place thinks no one is paying attention.
