Photojournalism
Documentary coverage of the stories happening in this community right now. Work that informs rather than promotes, and that creates a record of what is real rather than what is curated.
The Approach
Document.
Do Not
Decorate.
Photojournalism operates under a different set of rules than client photography. There is no brief, no brand to serve, no outcome to engineer. The job is to be present and to document what is actually happening — with enough skill and enough restraint to let the subject speak for itself.
The photojournalism practice focuses on Lake County and the surrounding area. This is not a major media market. Local stories often go undocumented or covered only in text. The goal is to add a visual layer to those stories — to give them a face and a context that written accounts alone cannot provide.
This work is independent. It is not commissioned, not sponsored, and not subject to editorial approval by the subjects it covers. Images from this practice may be made available to local media, community organizations, and publications that serve the region.
Important Distinctions
How This Differs from Client Work
- No client direction
- Photojournalism is editorially independent. The photographer determines what to cover and how to cover it. Subjects are not given approval over images.
- No commercial use
- Images from the photojournalism practice are not available for commercial licensing or promotional use by the subjects depicted.
- Public interest standard
- Coverage is limited to matters of genuine public interest. Personal stories are only covered with the explicit informed consent of the people involved.
- Not for hire
- This is not commercial documentary or corporate video. If you are looking for a professional to produce a documentary project for your organization, that falls under client sessions.
